Focused on two pillars of Japanese carpentry: tool set-up and joinery this entry-level class will lead you step by step through of the art and the technical craft of Japanese woodworking.
The first part of the week will be focused on the tools. You will learn how to set up/make:
In the second part of the week, we will switch our focus to joinery where you will use your tools to create a Japanese joinery “tree”, – a traditional exercise using a series of Japanese joints in a single piece of wood. You will learn how to layout and cut a variety of joints including ari tsugi and a jyuji mechigai tsugi,
Key Learning Points
You should have at least some woodworking experience, but beginner woodworkers are entirely capable of taking the course as it will cover basic techniques.
TOOLS NEEDED
NOTE: The class cost includes a high-quality Ryoba Nokogiri and Japanese Chisel that you get to take home, so do not purchase these if you need them. If you believe you have these tools already to setup, please contact Chris to confirm as he’ll be placing a group order before the start of class.
