In this five-day class you will learn about the cultural significance of joinery in traditional Japanese architecture, appreciate the beauty and utility of Japanese tools in modern woodworking, as well as discover the scalability and utility of carpentry joints for modern furniture design.

Focused on two pillars of Japanese carpentry:  tool set-up and joinery this entry-level class will lead you step by step through of the art and the technical craft of Japanese woodworking.

The first part of the week will be focused on the tools.  You will learn how to set up/make:

  • a ryoba nokogiri (Japanese two-sided saw)
  • an oire nomi (Japanese bench chisel)
  • a sumi kebiki (ink marking gauge)

In the second part of the week, we will switch our focus to joinery where you will use your tools to create a Japanese joinery “tree”, – a traditional exercise using a series of Japanese joints in a single piece of wood.  You will learn how to layout and cut a variety of joints including ari tsugi and a jyuji mechigai tsugi,

Key Learning Points

  • Foundational knowledge of traditional tools
  • Joinery layout including the center line technique
  • How to sharpen and maintain Japanese chisels
  • Application of Japanese Joinery

You should have at least some woodworking experience, but beginner woodworkers are entirely capable of taking the course as it will cover basic techniques.
