MARY MAY

Live & On-Line

High Relief Carving  with Mary May

This is the perfect time to work on your craft! And you can do it from the comfort of your home, in your pajamas!

Learn along with other woodworkers as you participate in this live video conference class taught by Mary May and chat with your classmates from around the nation and world in real-time

There is a lot of interaction, and you’ll get to watch and engage with Mary as she leads you through the process and techniques of carving this beautiful calla lily from her workshop in Charleston, SC.  It’s as close as you can get to sitting at her carving bench with her:)

The class is split into manageable sections of approximately two hours online followed by work periods where you will work in your own workshop.

Mary will walk you through the step-by-step process of :

    • high relief carving
    • delicate undercutting techniques
    • creating multiple overlapping illusions
    • carving the curves on the surface of the lily

Resources

You will get handouts, links, and if you need it basswood for carving.  We’ve also provided a link below for tool purchases if you need them.

The class is beginner level but to get more out of it we recommend you view the Free beginner lessons (1-6) on Mary May’s School of Traditional Woodcarving. These Free lessons will help get you started with the basics – safety, tool sharpening, carving fundamentals, and lessons on carving in the correct grain direction.

You’ll also be invited to join our private Facebook group where you can chat, post questions and get advice outside of class hours.  Come and join the quarantine team!

Finally, we will record each day’s class, so that you can refer back to it as you work through your assigned tasks and homework.

Sign-ups are limited  – We want each of you to have a fabulous experience!

Class Schedule & Times

All times are shown in EST (GMT -5) Eastern Standard Time

Tools & Materials Needed:

  • Laptop with a camera or PC with webcam & wifi
  • Piece of basswood – 3-1/4″ wide x 6-3/4″ long x 1″ thick (grain should go along the 6-3/4″ length) (there is an option on check out for ordering this)
  • Chisels needed:
    • 6mm v-chisel; #3, 6mm; #3, 14mm; #5, 14mm; #7, 6mm; #7, 14mm
    • This link shows the carving tools you’ll need – its retail site, so if you don’t have them you can buy them there.  CHISELS.
  • Some mechanism to hold your wood to a surface:

The ideal way of holding your wood to keep clamps away from your carving is to use bench dogs on a woodworking bench. If you don’t have this don’t worry.  You can work on any level surface (even a kitchen table).  To hold the carving we will attach the cut-out bass wood blank to a temporary backer board (a few inches larger than the cut-out) and clamp that to your work surface. You can attach your carving blank to the backer board 2 ways: 1: either double-sided tape (woodworkers double-sided tape or golf-grip tape works well) or 2: you can use regular wood glue with newspaper or paper-bag between the carving blank and the backer board and clamp tightly until dry. If you need assistance in preparing this, you can contact Mary ahead of the class.

  • Pen and Paper
  • A sheet of carbon paper
