Daryl Peart Greene and Greene
Darrell Peart
Instructor
He started his career making and selling small wooden items at Seattle’s Pike Place Market. To broaden his experience, he then worked for many years in various high-end custom shops throughout the Puget Sound area gaining an extensive background in both commercial and custom furniture making. The influence of Greene & Greene can clearly be seen in Darrell’s work, but he has rarely exact reproductions. Exploring new design work is where his passion lies, and has brought him acclaim in the woodworking world. Darrell also writes and lectures about design, woodworking, and the history of Greene & Greene. He has written articles for Home Furniture, Today’s Woodworker, Fine Woodworking, Woodwork, Popular Woodworking, American Woodworker, Woodworker West, Style 1900, British Woodworking, 360 Woodworking, The SAPFM Journal, and Australian Wood Review.

Greene & Greene Table with Darrell Peart

In this class, you will learn about the Greene and Greene style and build a classic Rafter Tail Table.

The table design is based on the rafter tails at the Gamble House in Pasadena, California, which reach beyond to support the roof.  These tables rely upon G&G motifs and concepts and take a few sweet liberties.

Some basic style principles of Greene & Greene include subtle round-overs,  soft edges, and setbacks where no two elements are on the same plane – one element is always proud of the other. This combination makes for beautifully soft depth and shadows.

Key Learning Points:

  • History of the Arts and Craft Movement and the Greene & Greene Style
  • Slip tenon joinery & half-lap joinery
  • Efficient parts processing using jigs and power tools
  • How to make Greene and Greene style ebony plugs
  • An afternoon visit to the Museum of American Arts and Craft Funiture in St Petersburg (optional)

Tool List IconTOOL LIST:  Please bring a 3/8th mortising bit and a dust respirator.  We’ll be working with Sapele – an African Mahogany, and even with vacs and air filters running, it tends to be a little dusty.
