Learn to build a classic side chair that incorporates all aspects of Windsor chair building. The class focuses on hand tool skills and green woodworking techniques.
“It is not clear when the first Windsor Chairs were made. The first Windsors were of the comb-back variety.[1] By the 18th-century steam-bending was being used to produce the characteristic “bow” of the Windsor chair.[2] The first chairs made this way were shipped to London from the market town of Windsor, Berkshire in 1724.[2] There is speculation that the chair derives its name from the town of Windsor, which became the centre for the trade between the producers and the London dealers.
This five-day class course will take you, step-by-step, through the process of handcrafting a Fan Back chair. It will cover every aspect of making this style of chair, beginning with lumber selection, chairmaking tools, hand shaping parts, working with compound angles, all the way through final assembly. Concentration will be on the making of a strong chair joint.
You will build this chair will be primarily with hand tools. (all turned parts will be provided.)
