Learn to Build Mid Century Modern Side Tables
Level: Beginner level 1/2
Mid-Century Modern architecture and furniture can be found in homes and designer showrooms around Florida and the rest of the US. It’s clean lines, practical style and just all around “cool” promise to stay a part of the custom furniture and woodworking world for decades to come.
In this hands-on woodworking class, you will build on your knowledge of woodworking (designing, milling, joinery, finishing) and along the way make one or a pair of iconic mid century modern tables. Mid-Century Modern (MCM) furniture designs are renowned for creating appealing tables that masterfully ‘float’ the top above minimalist table bases.
You will also learn about tool set-up and proper techniques for using stationary power equipment (jointer, planer, table saw, etc) and hand tools (squares, chisels, scrapers) and the lathe.
If you are new to woodworking or have not built any projects before we would like to encourage you to take the Beginning Woodwork class prior to this one.
Some of the key topics of learning will be:
- Understanding the Mid Century Design aesthetic
- How to design and create plans for building MCM to your current skill set
- How to mill lumber, create joinery and construct tables
- How to make multiples
- Shop safety
- An overview of finishing techniques
You will have the choice of using either Walnut or Cherry as your material.
The goal of the class is to complete the construction of the tables. Basic oil/wax finishes will be available.
Tuition: $750 per person + $150 Materials
