Arts & Craft Bookcase – Kevin Rodel

Taught by Kevin Rodel – a maker, designer and author of Arts & Craft furniture this Beginning bookcase making class builds on your woodworking knowledge and prepares you to build larger case work pieces such as buffets and chests of drawers.  The project focuses on the Arts and Craft era of furniture design but can easily be adapted to your aesthic.   Some prior experience or introductory courses required.

This class will also include a special presentation by Museum of American Arts and Craft Movement


What You Will Learn:
In this five day project, you’ll learn and practice bookcase making techniques that will include:

  • variations on cabinet backs
  • cutting onlay corbels,
  • floating frame and panels,
  • mortise and tenons – floating & through, tusk
  • support mechanism and weight loads for shelves
  • general design aspects of the Arts & Crafts era



What You Will Do:
From design to construction, you’ll make your own Arts & Craft bookcase. You will choose from pre-designed plans or create your own, keeping
in mind that the time constraints of the class. You will use the appropriate techniques to design, mill, joint, sand, assemble, and finishyour piece. The goal is to complete your piece,
aside from finishing.

Materials & Books Needed:
Materials Needed: Your material fee includes the following lumber for your table: Cherry, Oak
Additional lumber is available for purchase and may include: Walnut, Nogal, Sapele, Purple Heart, Wenge, Eucalyptus, Ambrosia Maple,
You may bring your own wood, excluding any exotic (grown outside of the US), salvage, or high resin lumber (e.g. pine, cypress).

Studio & Materials Fee: 
There is a non-refundable registration fee of $45 that will be added to your order. This fee applies only to your first class.
