Build An Arts & Craft Bookcase

January 29 - February 2 | 9:00 am - 4:00 pm


The beginning bookcase making class builds on your woodworking knowledge and prepares you to build larger case work pieces and is a good lead into the cabinet making class. Some prior experience or introductory courses required.

[one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]What You Will Learn:[/one_fifth]In this five day project, you’ll learn and practice bookcase making techniques that will include:

  • shiplapped cabinet backs,
    [one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]  [/one_fifth]
  • cutting onlay corbels,
    [one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]  [/one_fifth]
  • floating frame and panels,
    [one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]  [/one_fifth]
  • mortise and tenons – floating & through,
    [one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]  [/one_fifth]
  • support mechanism and weight loads for shelves
    [one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]  [/one_fifth]
  • general design aspects of the Arts & Crafts era.

 

[one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]What You Will Do:[/one_fifth]From design to construction, you’ll make your own Arts & Craft bookcase. You will choose from pre-designed plans or create your own, keeping[one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]  [/one_fifth] in mind that the time constraints of the class. You will use the appropriate techniques to design, mill, joint, sand, assemble, and finishyour piece. The goal is to complete your piece, [one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]  [/one_fifth]aside from finishing.

[one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]  [/one_fifth]Additional lumber is available for purchase and may include: Walnut, Nogal, Sapele, Purple Heart, Wenge, Eucalyptus, Ambrosia Maple,
[one_fifth padding=”0 10px 0 0″]  [/one_fifth] You may bring your own wood, excluding any exotic (grown outside of the US), salvage, or high resin lumber (e.g. pine, cypress).
