This traditional carving class, taught by world renown Alexander Grabovetskiy , will give you the skills to add creative, unique details to all your wood working projects.
This class will advance your abilities, no matter if you are new to carving or have been working on your skills for a while. You need to have a solid foundation in the fundamentals of carving as well as mastery of several techniques. You will learn all of this and more in this class.
During the week you will do a variety of projects and exercises. You will also have the opportunity to work on carving a larger project and practice all of carving approaches, techniques and tools available to woodcarvers.

How to Sharpen Wood Carving Tools
Learn how to design and sharpen your tools so that you have better control and a more versatile woodcarving chisel. You will learn to sharpen with the confidence and efficiency. Sharp tools that easily bite into the wood and do not skate are an important ingredient for woodcarving with intent.
How to Design Wood Carvings
Learn how to design your wood carving projects using references and sources of imagery as well as the techniques of drawing in the classical tradition. This approach to building your design will expand your imagination and the steps to creating your own projects will start to come more easily to you.
How to Carve
Learn the mechanical steps in the process of carving including how to handle your carving tools. You will learn how rough out the beginnings of your project and how to do the delicate detailing at the end. You will learn good hand technique. Wood carving is a skill where you use your body as well as your hand to control of the gouges. Wood carving is all in the technique and learning the correct body mechanic steps will makes it flow much more easily. You will start by working on a few simple boards that will include the techniques of using gouges to do the majority of outlining and defining the lines of the designs and then move on from there.
There will also be a discussion of how to make the tools do a variety of cuts, even when the wood grain is not cooperating!
How to See
Yes, it sounds strange, but being able to see ahead in the 3D is very important in the carving process. It helps you do the right mechanical steps at the right time. We will teach you this sequential visual and mechanical process so that you can efficiently move through the progressive steps of your carving project.
Finally, if you are up for it, there will be additional projects that will focus on further advancing the tips and techniques of carving.
