Oct 21, 2019 - Oct 25, 2019 | 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

LEARN THE ART OF CREATIVE BOX MAKING

Well-known box maker and writer, Matt Kenney  will host this unique hands-on class on the art of creative box making. Come and learn from one of the best.

Hands on Creative Box Making

Matt Kenney inspired many woodworkers with his 52 boxes in 52 weeks project – each of his boxes were a exquisite examples of quality workmanship and creative, unique designs.

As a beginning or intermediate woodworker, you may wonder, “How do I evolve my skills from where I’m at now to there?”  This class will show you how – the inspiration process, the technical sequence, and the woodworking skills needed along the way.

As Matt does in his own shop, we will start with the wood.  You are welcome to bring your own wood, as you may have pieces that tell their own story, but you can also purchase from the school’s stock. An understanding of wood and its nature as a creative material is fundamental in the understanding of design so we will begin with a discussion of the material and its characteristics.  We will then work on the other elements of design, and we will quickly make necessary jigs to begin crafting boxes using a variety of joints.

Each student should be able to complete between one and three unique boxes during the week.
The goal is to complete your pieces, but not necessarily finish them. A simple oil wax finish is available.

Learning how to make a good box is a great stepping stone into case and cabinetry work and we encourage students who are interested in these classes to take this one first.
