This four week intensive (March 5th – 30th) is designed to establish the fundamental knowledge and practical skill set for students interested in becoming furniture makers. Made up of four, week-long classes it combines lecture, demonstration and significant hands on work. At the end of intensive you will have made several pieces of furniture both by hand and by machine as well have built a solid knowledge about the the process of woodworking and furniture making. It is also taught by four very diverse noted furniture makers all of whom have decades of experience. It is rare opportunity to have access to these makers and the wealth of knowledge you gain from studying with them will be remarkable. Each week focuses on a new area:
Open to All
- Week 1 is focused on foundational knowledge and include anatomy of wood, design processes, basic building sequences etc,
- Week 2 you will focus on Cabinet Making from a technical skill aspect, the goal is to expand your practical skill sets as well as increasing your knowledge of case work. (please note that this class starts on Saturday 10th)
- Week 3 is a project based class that will build your hand tool and joinery skills. You will learn how to sharpen, cut joints with hand planes,saws and chisels, and get more intune with the nuances of wood grain. You’ll also build your bandsaw skills.
- Week 4 we will switch gears into a more traditional woodworking project – an Arts and Craft Bookcase. We will study a furniture design era as well as joinery and finishing techniques specific to the style.
From design to construction, you’ll make design and make a chopping board, a table, a bookcase, a cabinet and a tool case.

Materials Needed: $250 Materials costs for weeks 2 & 4 (these will include Maple, Cherry, Oak, Sapelle). Materials are provided for class 1, 3.
Additional lumber is available for purchase and may include: Walnut, Nogal, Purple Heart, Wenge, Eucalyptus, Ambrosia Maple
