Carve an Green Wood Bowl – Open to All

Get ready to turn an ordinary green wood log into a beautiful functional bowl using traditional tools and techniques.

In this class taught by Jason Lonon, you’ll learn to sculpt wood into one-of-a-kind graceful vessels using traditional tools such as

  • axes
  • adze
  • sloyd knives
  • drawknives
  • spokeshaves and gouges

After covering wood selection and layout, we will focus on adze technique and axemanship.  You will be amazed at how these two tools can remove vast quantities of wood in the roughing out phase, and yet produce fine surface textures as we approach the finished bowl. Posture, technique, and safety will be stressed.

Various knives and gouges will be used to produce the final surface finish.  This class will advance your abilities, no matter if you are new to bowl carving or have been working on your skills for a while. Depending on your skill and inclination, be prepared to explore several different sizes and forms of carved bowls. Some sharpening will also be covered.

Please note that good technique is more important than great strength.  Both men and women can comfortably carve using these techniques.  Bowl carving is a skill where you use your body as well as your hands to control the tools.

Tools you should bring – Carving axe, a pencil compass in the 8-in. to 12-in. range, a drawknife, long bent gouges (#6 to #8 range and others), knives, a flat spokeshave mallet and any other carving tools if you have them.

Adzes will be provided for you to use, and purchase if you choose.

The class is taught by Jason Lonon who is a nationally known tool maker and green wood woodworker. www.jasonlonon.com
