Heirloom English Arts & Crafts Desk
The classic English desk functions well for a laptop or as a writing desk. As a gift for a loved one, or as a part of your office its combines traditional joinery with modern-day building techniques and will last for generations.
Inspired by once widely-known English manufacturer’s designs for bedroom washstands, this desk incorporates the signature ring-turned feet and curved aprons of the Harris Lebus furniture company. (Please note that the desk pictured here has flared feet. See the detail image for the ring-turned style.)
The techniques you’ll learn, form a solid foundation for a variety of furniture –tables, chests of drawers, and more–using a mix of machine and hand-cut joinery.
You will also come away with a handsome desk and a useful piece for your office or home. There are a few design variants that will be discussed in class, and the desk build can refocus s many of the stylistic aspects of A&C – such as the corbels.
- You will also have a choice of a wide array of lumber species to make your desk from. Choices include:
- Oak (traditional), Walnut (handsome and bold), Maple (lighter more contemporary twist), Sapele (Ribbon Mahogany – mellow and harmonious) Cherry (warm and rich)
- The drawer pull
Please note that as with any week-long project class, you may need to complete your desk at home, depending on your progress in the class. Rest assured, we will cover all of the techniques you’ll need. The School can also provide you with a shipping quote should you choose to assemble your piece. Alternatively, if you are flying in, work can be shipped home, unassembled using a large flat box (ie, bicycle box) and checked as an extra bag.
The class is a combination of 5 days of instruction with an optional 6th day for final touches on Saturday.
Some of the key learning points include:
- dovetail joinery
- arts and craft details
- internal drawer structures
- wood selection
- hand and machinery use
