January 7 - January 11 | 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Learn How To Turn on a Lathe

A wonderful opportunity to learn to turn on a lathe with a great instructor in comfortably paced class. Open to new turners, as well as those of all skill levels who would like to break bad turning habits and fortify their skill base.

Taught by renowned turner and furniture maker Mark Gardner  you will build a strong foundation of techniques for spindle, end grain, and faceplate turning. Starting with the essentials of sharpening, Mark will show you how to work safely and effectively with standard turning tools such as spindle and bowl gouges, scrapers, and parting tools.

This is a hands on class.  Every student has their own brand new lathe (Jet Midi 1220) with a set of gouges.   Beginning with spindle turning and progress through a series of exercises to learn sizing, fitting, and bowl turning. Instruction covers everything from wood selection to finishing, as students create a series of projects. Mark discusses problem solving and the development of a personal turning style.

This class is  perfect for the beginner who is curious about learning how to use the lathe; and is also very good for those who have been turning for a bit and want to add finess and more technique to their skill base.
