Introduction To Turning: Fundamental Lathe Skills

Learn to Turn using the Lathe

Spend a fun, easy paced week  learning the fundamentals in turning class that will extend any skill set and level of tuner from foundation level and beyond.

You will work on building and advancing you skills in tool preparation and sharpening, spindle, bowl, and platter work.  Your instructor Rudy Lopez will help you to build and refine your ABC’s of tool control and use and help each individual in areas that they want to develop.

This class will benefit furniture makers, artists, sculptors and wood lovers at all levels of learning. Whether you are a beginner, or even if you have been turning for a while this class will provide a fun safe atmosphere to develop and improve your wood turning skills.  You will have your own lathe and plenty of hands on time to work on a wide range of projects.

On the last day we will get together for a rustic lunch (think Ploughmans) and we’ll use the plates, cups and spoons that we have made.

 In this hands-on class, you will learn about wood selection, tool sharpening, chucking techniques as well as  the techniques of spindle, end grain and faceplate turning (dont worry if you don’t know what these mean – we’ll show you!) while creating useable objects such as platters, small vessels and bowls. There will be an sessions on sharpening, proper tool use, and woodturning safety and machinery maintenance.  You will also learn detailed methods for  sanding and finishing your projects.

Tools Needed: None – feel free to bring a turners smock and/or face shield

Tuition: $750 per person
Studio & Materials Fee: $30
Registration Fee:  $45 (first time only)
