Traditional Carving Techniques for Beginners & Intermediates
This traditional carving class, taught by world-renown Alexander Grabovetskiy, will give you the skills to add creative, unique details to all your woodworking projects.
This class will advance your abilities, no matter if you are new to carving or have been working on your skills for a while.
In this extended one day class, you will practice of carving approaches, techniques and use a wide array of carving tools while making a rosette.
During the class we will touch upon:
How to Sharpen Wood Carving Tools
Learn how to design and sharpen your tools so that you have better control and a more versatile woodcarving chisel. You will learn to sharpen with confidence and efficiency. Sharp tools that easily bite into the wood and do not skate are an essential ingredient for woodcarving with intent.
How to Design Wood Carvings
Learn how to design your wood carving projects using references and sources of imagery as well as the techniques of drawing in the classical tradition. This approach to building your design will expand your imagination, and the steps to creating your own projects will start to come more easily to you.
The bulk of the day will be focused on hands-on time
How to Carve
Learn the mechanical steps in the process of carving, including how to handle your carving tools. You will learn how to rough out the beginnings of your project and how to do the delicate detailing at the end. You will learn proper hand technique.
Wood carving is a skill where you use your body as well as your hand to control the gouges. Wood carving is all in the technique, and learning the correct body mechanic steps will make it flow much more easily. You will start by working on a few simple boards that will include the techniques of using gouges to do the majority of outlining and defining the lines of the designs and then move on from there.
There will also be a discussion of how to make the tools do a variety of cuts, even when the wood grain is not cooperating!
