Contemporary Console Desk

In this class, students will learn how to build a modern style desk. This project is designed for beginner and novice students to help them gain confidence in tackling larger woodworking projects. The desk features elements of both case and table construction, making it a great learning experience. Students will also learn to consider human anatomy and geometry during the design phase. The class will focus on important aspects of executing larger projects, including material selection and preparation, task planning, managing mistakes, and using time and energy efficiently.

Key Learning Points

You will learn about

• Building small jigs (we will make a small jig for drilling the dowel pins into the rabbets)
• Template routing. The drawer pulls will be a geometric shape, made by the students.
• Building drawer boxes with pinned rabbets
• Using under mount drawer slide hardware
• Tapering with a bandsaw and hand plane
• Tapping for threads in wood.
• Choices for finishing prep and finishing

You should have basic machine and hand tool skills or experience. We will use the table saw and/or router for joinery, the bandsaw to make the tapers on the legs, and a jointer and hand plane to smooth the tapers.  The larger panels of the piece weigh around 15 lbs each. The completed project weighs close to 40lbs (with the drawers removed).  (Shipping home can be arranged)
