Console Table

In this 5 day class, you will learn to design and build this contemporary table.  Clean-lined, it incorporates loads of visual design ideas as well as some uncommon joinery.

This table makes a fantastic gift for memorable moments and can also allow the maker to incorporate the ‘story’ of why certain materials are used, giving a piece of furniture additional meaning.

Key Learning Points

You will learn about:

  • Designing and using templates and models to ensure aesthetic consistency
  • Cutting, shaping and fairing long curves on the bandsaw and refining with hand tools
  • Mortise and Tenon joinery
  • Designing and using embellishment using pyrography and color
  • Working with a mix of power and hand tools

You should have intermediate machine and hand tool skills or experience and be able to sharpen your tools (spokeshave/block plane/chisel) as this will not be covered.  Note if you are travelling to class the School has all of these tools, but if you are bringing your own please make sure they are sharp before you arrive.

There will be a lot of hand work to shape the legs along with some machine-based work.  Our goal is to get the table to the assembly point.  You may choose not to glue it up if you want to ship it home (something the School can help you with).

The level of pyrography will be something you will determine based on your interests during the class.  If it is extensive, it may need to be continued post the class.

Tool List IconTOOL LIST:

  • Spokeshave curve soled
  • Small block plane (LN 102 or violin makers or equivalent size)
  • ¼” chisel for squaring up the domino tenons (available at School)
  • Smoothing plane (the School has either a Lee Valley or HNT Gordan at each bench)

MATERIALS NEEDED:  Provided by the School
