  • Understanding Wood and Joinery – lecture/discussion
    • Introduction to Tools for handcut joinery
    • Terms: joint actions, joint names
    • Elements of a joint, types of joints
    • Wood movement, grain, strengths of wood
  • The Rabbet & Dado Joints
    • Introduction to Rabbets & Dados– elements of joint, variations, application
      • Learn to Cut Rabbets, Dados, Dado Rabbets, Tongue & Groove, Finger Joints

DAY 2

  • The Lap & Bridle Joints
    • Introduction to Lap & Bridle Joints– elements of joint, variations, application
      • Learn to Cut Corner Half lap, cross half lap, corner Bridle Joints
  • The Dovetail
    • Introduction to Dovetails – elements of joint, variations, application
    • Learn to Cut Through Dovetails
      • Laying out and cutting through dovetails—building on pins and tails
      • Practice project (small box)
    • Learn to Cut Half Blind Dovetails
      • Demonstration on how to cut half-blind dovetails

DAY 3

  • Dovetails Continued
    • Learn to cut dovetails with different thicknesses of wood
    • Learn to cut Lap Dovetails
    • Layout and cut lap dovetails
  • Mortise & Tennons
    • Introduction to Mortise and Tennons
    • Elements and application and variations of the joint.
    • Learn to layout and cut a mortise and tenons by hand
    • Layout and cut a:
      • Through mortise and tenon
      • A Haunched mortise & Tenon
      • Frame & Panel

DAY 4

  • Mortise & Tennon Continued
    • Angled mortise and tenon layout and cutting techniques
    • Layout and cut a trestle mortise and tenon joint.
  • Dynamic cutting, symmetrical layout, converging charts
  • Three Way Joints Just for Fun
    • Introduction to the three way joint
    • Elements and application and variations of the joint.
    • Learn to layout and cut a by hand

DAY 5—Cabinetmaking joinery & handtool work

  • Case joinery—rabbits, housed joints and joint choices for the frames
  • Door joinery- Cope and stick joinery for doors
  • Tops & Panels – Beading Planes
  • Hand scraping
  • Project Work completions
  • How to correct mistakes
  • 2:45 pm clean up and presentation
