Instructor
Taeho Kwon attended East Carolina University and majored in Commercial Arts, studying Interior Design, and has been a Furniture designer for 27 years and a woodworker for 24 years. During those years, he spent numerous years learning and practicing in building Buddhist temples, Hanok (traditional Korean house), and traditional furniture to acquire the knowledge of complex joinery passed down for thousands of years. While gaining skills through participating in Buddhist Temple and Hanok building, Taeho spent almost 15 years researching the traditional joinery that can last 1,000 years which are forgotten art in our current time. His plan has been to utilize this advanced joinery in his furniture design, as represented in his Sitting Bench / Coffee Table, Entry Table, and most of the furniture he creates. He then decided to pass down his knowledge to all woodworking enthusiasts by having workshops across the US. Since then, he’s been teaching for the last ten years. All his workshops involve complex joinery by making unique projects designed by Taeho or modified from traditional Korean design to suit modern living while utilizing the forgotten methods to last for hundreds of years. Taeho now lives in Southern California, works as a speciality builder for numerous designers and architects for six to nine months, and teaches for numerous woodworking and crafts schools in the US for about three months of the year. He has won many awards in the "Design in Wood" annual competition in San Diego, including Master Woodworker Trophy.

Cantilevered Table

Although this class will teach the making of a sitting bench/coffee table, many other aspects of woodworking will also be focused on.

You will learn how to make furniture that will last not only a lifetime but hundreds of years, generation to generation, without any extra time or work necessary. This can be done just by utilizing the characteristics of the wood and its behaviour. Taeho will share his profound knowledge of joinery that will take your work to a new level. Not only will the end result be a unique two-in-one sitting bench/coffee table, but you will also learn the proper utilization of wood to last for the millennial truly.

Though this bench may seem straightforward, consisting of only six parts, unexpected complications and challenges will occur. However, by the last day will leave a great enhancement in the hand skills of the students, knowledge of the wood movement, and of course, a beautiful piece of functional art piece.

The complex joinery (three different joints interlocking) may intimidate beginners; however, shaping and some joints will be made by using jigs that Taeho will bring.

This workshop is good for all levels of woodworking experience.

Note:  You will have the option of bringing your own slab top if you would like to have the live edge presentation.  Alternatively, the School will provide a plank-based panel.  The table base materials provided will be walnut, and table tops will be maple.

Class Learning Objectives:

  • History of Eastern and Western Timber Framing
  • Layout and cutting of modified castle joints
  • Layout and cutting of through tenons
  • Use of chisels, Japanese saws, fitness fitting
